My mother and I used to argue over this one for ages. Neither of us haven’t agreed on each other nor drawn a convincing solution for both of us. Maybe most of the arguments weren’t really about God. They were mostly about the things that happens to us that we didn’t choose and can’t explain.
Randomness, God, Karma or whatever name that suits. Even call it a black swan (Taleb). This all points out to the same gap between the things in our control and the things that are not. The above words just fills the gap with whatever words makes us feel less exposed.
I have a few more thoughts on the previous post on What the brain shouts and what the gut whispers. My theory, half serious and half fun. Maybe God was invented to bring a discipline mechanism. More morals, ethics and humanity. Very useful, even it is not provable. Of course, being useful doesn’t prove. Maybe that’s why it stayed even now.
There are two possible things that humans co do with this gap
One, you become your own certainty. You trust yourself. You are the creator of your life, no one or even the universe is not going to rescue you, Your meaning, your outcome. Call it the atheist mode.
Two, you borrow certainty from somewhere else. You trust the nature or universe or god in any religion or in any form. You outsource the faith from something.
Most of us live somewhere between the two, trusting ourselves on some days and something bigger/uncertain on the other (hard) days. But either way, the belief becomes part of who we are.
At the both cases, you have to jump before you have proof. A leap of faith in one self or in something bigger/unknown. If you refuse both, you get paralysis and fall into the abyss. That is the consequence of not choosing at all.
One such powerful quote of Andy to red in The Shawshank Redemption
Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
Maybe that’s the closest thing to a proof or conclusion to arrive at. Choosing hope. God may exist if you want God to exist. In whatever form you want it to take. Or at least, a belief of God works for you if you let it.
Cheers
